The Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring Tool is the most commonly used tool to manage the newborn that was exposed to substances during pregnancy, but it is a subjective tool that leads to longer stay in the hospital and separation of mother and baby.
The pediatric team from Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, USA developed a different assessment tool, The Eat, Sleep and Console (ESC) Care Tool, which was adapted for use in BC.
The objective of the ESC Tool is to view the mother as the first line of treatment to provide responsive, newborn centered care and support the substance exposed newborn to function like any other baby, focusing on how the baby eats, sleep, console and gain weight in the presence of symptoms of withdrawal.
This webinar will be presented by Jola Berkman, and will review substance withdrawal in the newborn, the ESC Care Tool, and how you, as a community service provider can support the pregnant and new mother using the ESC principles of care.
