Neurodiversity refers to the natural range of human brain differences, including autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These neurodevelopmental differences impact attention, energy, impulsivity, emotional regulation, communication, learning and self esteem. Autism impacts 2% of adults, ADHD impacts 3-5%, and stimulants are among the most commonly prescribed medications during pregnancy, with an estimated 1% exposure prevalence. Research on neurodivergence in the perinatal period is emerging and imperfect but shows that there are risks to the birther and fetus. Perinatal care providers need to be aware of the impacts of ADHD &/or Autism on pregnancy, postpartum & lactation. Come learn about ADHD & autism in the perinatal period, the impact of hormone changes over the lifespan, and go home with tips and tricks for creating a more neuro-inclusive practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • the link between hormones and ADHD, autism
  • safety of stimulant medication during pregnancy lactation
  • tips for creating a neuron inclusive practice
