In this session, participants will learn about the framework for "Coming Full Circle" - returning to cultural teachings, ceremonies and sovereignty. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the Cultural, Spiritual, and Relationality of Indigenous Pregnancy and Postpartum Journeys.
  • Apply the Honouring Indigenous Women’s and Families’ Pregnancy Journeys Document to Support Culturally Grounded Practice.
  • Identify Practical Strategies for Integrating Culturally Safe, Trauma-Informed Supports Across the Perinatal Continuum. 
  • Explore Relational and Community-Based Pathways for Supporting Indigenous Families Through Grief, Loss, and Healing. 
  • Strengthen Capacity to Work Ethically and Collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous Patient Navigators.
  • Reflect on Their Own Role Within Systems Shaped by Colonial Histories and Identify Opportunities to Shift Practice.
  • Understand How Culturally Safe Perinatal Supports Can Be Integrated into Organizational Structures and Policies.

Presenter: Elder Lucy Barney, MScN, RN

Lucy is from the Titqet Nation on her father’s side and Nquatqua on her mothers side. Lucy is mother of two boys, Gabe and John. Grandmother to 6. Sister to 12 siblings. Aunty to many and granddaughter to many. Lucy became an RN in 1997. 

Lucy worked at the Canadian Diabetes Association coordinating the development of culturally relevant diabetes information for Indigenous people. From there she became the program manager of Chee Mamuk at the BC Centre for Disease Control developing culturally relevant, culturally safe and trauma-informed education and resources on HIV/STI and HCV. Lucy then moved on to the Perinatal Services BC as Indigenous Lead creating resources and educational material for the Indigenous population.

Lucy completed her Masters of Science in Nursing in 2005 from the University of British Columbia. She has been awarded many nursing awards through the UBC School of Nursing, NNPBC, Langara College, INAC.

Lucy has always been busy doing craft work like beading, sewing, and jewelry making – which is her passion in the creativity of design.  Lucy is also a champion Traditional Women Dancer.
